Over the last few years, Chinese investors have been setting up ‘tissue culture’ banana plantations in Laos. But in April 2017, the Laos government ordered the plantations to be shut down after multiple reports surfaced about how the excessive use of pesticides and chemicals had damaged the environment and endangered the lives of workers.
Entrepreneurs are now investing more and more in Kachin State, where the long-term
conflict between government forces and the KIA makes law enforcement difficult. Banana
plantations are proliferating rapidly, with a big share of the land acquired illegally, often
from pressure, threats, deception or duress. The plantations face strong local opposition
from CSOs.
