Exhibition From February 19 to March 6 | Goethe Villa
Opening | 19 February 2020
By Stéphane Noël
With this project, Belgium photographer Stéphane Noël wanted to pay tribute to the last charcoal burners of Cuba. Also known as ‘swamp people’, they are probably the last generation of men and women performing the ritual involving the slow metamorphosis of wood into charcoal. “This work was an extraordinary meeting with humble and pure people, proud of the superhuman labour that they carry out with such amazing dignity. They gave a lot to me. I hope, through this project, to sincerely thank them,” says the photographer. Noël is renowned for making gum bichromate prints, using a multi-layered printing process that originated in the 19th century. It can take him up to ten days to make a single print.
