Plastic as we know it has only existed for the last 60–70 years, but in that time it has transformed everything in our lives, from clothing to cooking. One of its great advantages is that it is designed to last for a very long time. This is also its greatest disadvantage. Over the years, more than 6 billion tons of plastic waste has been generated – the equivalent of the weight of 1.5 million elephants. Only 10% is recycled; a little more is incinerated, but most of it accumulates in landfills or in the natural environment. It can take up to 100 years to biodegrade. In Myanmar, the equivalent of 120 garbage trucks of single-use plastic bags is dumped into rivers everyday. Fish eat plastic. We eat fish. We eat plastic toxins…
